Dr. Edward Wayne Buchel, MD FACS
 
Dr. Edward Buchel has been a practicing surgeon for over 10 years. He completed his medical degree and internship at University of Manitoba before going to St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York for his general surgery residency. He completed his plastic surgery residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He later was attending staff at the Mayo Clinic Medical School as well as serving as Program Director, Plastic Surgery Microvascular Fellowship.
 
In 2004, Dr. Buchel returned to Manitoba as an Associate Professor of Surgery and Head of the Section of Plastic Surgery, Faculty of Medicine at University of Manitoba and Winnipeg Regional Health Authority. He is Deputy Chair of Surgery for the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, the Medical Site Leader of the Surgery Program at Health Sciences Centre and served as Program Director for the Section of Plastic Surgery at the University of Manitoba until February 2009. Dr. Buchel sits on the Editorial Boards of Canadian Journal of Surgery and Microsurgery
 
He has been involved in developing the Breast Reconstruction Team since its inception in 2004.
 
 
Dr. Avinash Islur, BSc MD FRCSC
 
Dr. Avinash Islur completed his medical degree at University of Toronto. He first came to Winnipeg in 2002 to complete his residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery at University of Manitoba. In 2007, he moved to San Francisco to complete a Fellowship in Hand and Microsurgical Reconstructive Plastic Surgery at the Buncke Clinic in San Francisco. 
 
Dr. Islur returned to Manitoba in 2008 as an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Section of Plastic Surgery, Faculty of Medicine at University of Manitoba. Dr. Islur serves on the Editorial Board of Microsurgery. He joined the Breast Reconstruction Team in 2008. 
 
 
Dr. Thomas E.J. Hayakawa, BSc MD FRCSC
 
Dr. Thomas Hayakawa has nearly 10 years’ experience as a plastic surgeon. He completed his medical training at the University of Manitoba, then moved on to do two Fellowships, one in Reconstructive Microsurgery at Buncke Clinic in San Francisco and another in Facial Reconstructive Surgery at the Plastic Surgery Center of the Pacific in Honolulu.
 
In 2002, Dr. Hayakawa returned to Manitoba, as an Assistant Professor of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine at the University of Manitoba. He has been involved in developing the Breast Reconstruction Team since its inception in 2004.
 
 
 
Dr. Leif J. Sigurdson, MD MSc MBA FRCSC
 
Dr. Leif Sigurdson has been a plastic surgeon for over 10 years. He studied medicine at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, and completed his surgery internship and residency at Dalhousie University in Halifax. From 1997 to 1999, Dr. Sigurdson completed two fellowships in clinical plastic surgery at Dalhousie University and Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. In 2008, he joined the Section of Plastic Surgery, Faculty of Medicine at the University of Manitoba as an Associate Professor of Surgery. One of Dr. Sigurdson’s many research interests is the information needs of breast reconstruction patients. He became of member of the Breast Reconstruction Team in 2008.
 
Since 1996, Dr. Sigurdson has made 11 trips with Operation Smile, travelling to Ecuador, China, Peru, Honduras, Bolivia, Paraguay and Russia to correct cleft lips and palates. In addition to his medical training, Dr. Sigurdson holds a Masters Degree in Public Health and Epidemiology from Dalhousie University and an MBA from St. Mary’s University in Halifax.
 
 
Dr. Stephanie Olivier, MD FRCSC
 
Dr. Stephanie Olivier completed her medical degree at Sherbrooke University. She received her surgery training at Sherbrooke University, McGill University and Université de Montréal. In 2006, Dr. Olivier moved to Manitoba to complete a Fellowship in Microsurgery and Breast Reconstruction at the University of Manitoba. Following completion of this fellowship, she joined the Section of Plastic Surgery, Faculty of Medicine at the University of Manitoba as an Assistant Professor of Surgery. Since 2006, she has been a member of the Breast Reconstruction Team.
